In September 2021, Garfield again denied he was in the film, saying, "No matter what I say... it's either going to be really disappointing for people or it's going to be really exciting". Garfield later described his denials as "rather stressful but also weirdly enjoyable". McKenna and Sommers began working on the script in earnest by December 2019. That idea introduced Dr. Stephen Strange to the story, and the duo began exploring the idea of the multiverse and potentially revisiting characters from past Spider-Man films. Initially they thought this would just be a tease for fans but they ultimately decided to fully integrate the past characters into the plot. Sommers said, "Once it was collectively decided that we were going to take this swing, we had to commit and we had to do what was right for the story." They optimistically wrote for all the characters they wanted in the film before those actors were confirmed to be returning.
Dillon is back and battling Holland’s Spider-Man but sporting a new look that is more in keeping with the comic book character . Dillon appears to have come through a portal from another realm in the multiverse. Doctor Octopus appears to have been brought from the Sam Raimi universe of Spider-Man films and interacts heavily with Peter, MJ and Ned. Some commentators said parts of the trailer appeared as though Maguire and Garfield had been edited out of the footage, such as a shot in which the Lizard appears to be struck by an invisible force. This alternative version had some additional, extended scenes and a new post-credits scene which weren't seen in the theatrical version of the film, taking the total runtime to 157 minutes. With his identity as Spider-Man revealed to the public and those who he is closest to facing the consequences, Peter Parker asks Doctor Strange to set things right. When the spell Strange casts goes awry, the multiverse starts to rupture, causing Spider-Man legacy villains to be pulled into the MCU.

Maguire wanted the film to reveal only minimal details about what happened to his character after the events of Spider-Man 3 . A scientist from an alternate reality with four artificially intelligent mechanical tentacles fused to his body after an accident. Molina reprises his role from Raimi's Spider-Man 2 , with this film continuing from the character's story prior to his death in that film. Molina was surprised by this approach because he had aged in the years since he made that film and no longer had the same physicality; digital de-aging was also used to make him look physically the same as in Spider-Man 2.
Under the guidance of Aunt May , Peter tries to give the villains a second chance, nearly destroying the fabric of reality in the process. Peter fixes things by asking Doctor Strange to cast a spell that will make everyone forget Peter Parker, saving reality at the cost of losing everyone he loves. Garfield made his musical debut in "Tick, Tick... Boom!" but toldGQthat he needed "about a year and a half" of coaching for his singing role. He revealed on "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert" that he and the movie's director, Lin-Manuel Miranda, share a massage therapist. Their mutual masseuse hilariously lied to Miranda about Garfield's singing ability, claiming that the actor was on the same level as Ariana Grande. "I've always wanted to learn how to sing properly and this was definitely the opportunity to do that," Garfield said, per GQ.

Willem Dafoe is back as Norman Osborn in the new film as one of the various villains to enter the MCU from the Multiverse. The Goblin appears to have come through a portal from the Sam Raimi universe of Spider films. Wong is seen leaving the New York Sanctum with his bag packed in the first trailer and warns Doctor Strange to not cast a spell to help Peter. Initially an indie film favorite, actor Jon Favreau has progressed to strong mainstream visibility into the millennium and, after nearly two decades in the business, is still enjoying character stardom as well as earning notice as a writer/producer/director. An Oscorp electrical engineer from an alternate reality who gained electric powers after an accident involving genetically modified electric eels. The character was redesigned for No Way Home, foregoing his original blue Ultimate Marvel-based design in favor of a yellow one more similar to his mainstream comic book appearance. Ned discovers that he can create portals using Strange's sling ring, which he and MJ use to try to locate Parker. They instead find alternate versions of Parker from the villains' universes who were also summoned by Strange's spell and who are nicknamed "Peter-Two" and "Peter-Three".

The group finds this universe's Parker, nicknamed "Peter-One", who is ready to give up and send the villains home to die. The alternate Parkers share stories of losing loved ones and encourage Peter-One to fight in May's honor, and the three Parkers develop cures for the villains. Under Strange's suggestion, Parker tries to convince an MIT administrator to reconsider the applications of both MJ and Ned but is attacked by Otto Octavius.
Sony and Disney announced a new agreement at the end of September which would allow Marvel Studios and Feige to produce another MCU Spider-Man film for Sony with Amy Pascal, scheduled for July 16, 2021. Disney was reportedly co-financing 25% of the film in exchange for 25% of its profits, while retaining the character's merchandising rights. Feige said he was "thrilled" that the character would remain in the MCU and said "all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working" on the franchise. Sony described their previous films with Marvel Studios as a "great collaboration", and said "our mutual desire to continue was equal to that of the many fans." At the time of the new agreement, Watts was in final negotiations to direct the film. Rhys Ifans reprises his role as Dr. Curt Connors / Lizard, an Oscorp scientist from Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man who transformed into a large reptilian monster while trying to regrow his missing arm.
After "K.C Undercover," Zendaya joined the Marvel-Sony "Spider-Man" trilogy as Michelle "MJ" Jones. Thomas Haden Church reprises his role as Flint Marko / Sandman, a small-time thief from Raimi's Spider-Man 3 who received an ability to transform into sand. Both Ifans and Church returned to voice the characters, though footage at the end of the film when they revert to their human forms was archival footage from The Amazing Spider-Man and Spider-Man 3, respectively. Watts served as a stand-in for Church on-set by providing motion-capture reference to the uncredited body double who physically replaced Church in the role. Charlie Cox reprises his role as Matt Murdock from Marvel Television's Netflix series, and Tom Hardy reprises his roles as Eddie Brock / Venom from Sony's Spider-Man Universe in an uncredited cameo appearance in the mid-credits scene. Outside of the superhero world, the actor, comedian, and singer is best known for starring in the sitcom "The Jamie Foxx Show" from 1996 to 2001. After that, he starred in blockbuster films such as "Horrible Bosses" and "Robin Hood," and he scored an Oscar for his work in the 2004 biopic "Ray." Part of Foxx's creative process is developing relationships with his co-stars off the camera.
Outside of his role in "Spider-Man 2," you might know Molina from the 2011 feature film "Abduction," where he played Frank Burton, a crooked CIA agent chasing Taylor Lautner and Lily Collins' characters. The movie certainly marked a change from some of his other work, which includes the animated films "Chill Out, Scooby-Doo!" and "Monsters University." Marvel fans will recognize Jon Favreau, who's starred in no less than seven MCU films as Harold "Happy" Hogan. In "Iron Man," Happy is Tony Stark's driver, bodyguard, and all-around personal assistant.
